Revealing The Enigma Of The Ancient Gods In The Bible: The Bible Speaks Of Ancient Gods In Flesh And Bone, Not Of A Universal God.

And in reality, even if there are called gods both in heaven and on earth , and in fact there are many gods and many lords, but for us there is only one.”
– Paul the Apostle, 1 Corinthians 8:5

In this third and latest article from the ongoing series “Elohim were not God: Plurality Unveiled” our exploration continues by delving into instances from the Bible where the conventional notion of God takes center stage.

However, as we delve into these narratives, a different perspective emerges: the true protagonists of the Bible are the Elohim – distinct physical entities made of flesh and bone, not God.

Would a human be able to fight with an almighty entity and would he stand a chance? If that god were to be an ancient human alien, one of the Elohim, then a real physical fight becomes much more possible;

9. Biblical Narrative: Pointless Considerations?

This part of the Bible verbalize the events of Yahweh and Moses freeing Jews out of Egypt. It specifies that the undertaking was accomplished by Yahweh alone and no other god (El) was with him.

12Yahweh alone led him; no foreign god was with him.

Deuteronomy 32:12  – Westminster Leningrad Codex

Again, if – as theology say – Yahweh was the only true God, which other god was supposed to be there helping him?

What’s the point of highlighting that him, Yahweh, accomplished the mission alone without the help of any foreigner El?

The truth is instead, that the so-called “gods”, that is to say the Elohim, were many. Each of them ruled over a people, but because of strategic and political issues, alliances were not uncommon.

Here the biblical author is pointing out that although the undertaking to free the Jews was a colossal project, Yahweh had accomplished it alone and without the help of any other of the Elohim.

The Bible’s narrative is purposeful, devoid of trivialities. The author’s emphasis on this facet signifies the plurality of the ancient gods, the Elohim, warranting such emphasis.

10. Ancient Gods In The Bible: Unveiling Elohim Physical Nature In Genesis 32.

The chapter 32 of the Genesis tells of a story that once again leaves many doubts about the presumed divine, spiritual nature of the Elohim as told by theologians. Actually, it once again delivers certainties about their very concrete, physical nature.

The protagonist of this story is Jacob, son of Isaac and Rebecca.

Our exploration will narrow its focus to select verses within this chapter. These verses, with resounding clarity, challenge the theological claim that Elohim were God. Instead, they present them as mortal beings, embodied in flesh and bone.

Compellingly, we encounter Jacob in a physical confrontation with one of these beings.

Jacob fighting with El

The event is captured in verses 24 and 26:

24 Jacob was left there alone. Then some man wrestled with him until the break of dawn.

26 When the man saw that he could not prevail over him, he struck Jacob’s hip at its socket, so that the hip socket was wrenched as they wrestled.

After the fight, verse 28 makes clear that Jacob had fought one of the Elohim:

Then the man said,” You shall no longer be spoken of as Jacob, but as Israel, because you have contended with Elohim and with mortals and have prevailed.

Once again the inconsistencies are glaring: a physical fight that lasts all night between a simple mortal, Jacob, and… God?

Not only that, but it is Jacob who prevails in the fight, and the text clearly says that the opponent… saw that he could not prevail over him, he struck Jacob’s hip at its socket, so that the hip socket was wrenched“.

The narrative, the event, the Hebrew terms used and the circumstances are far too earthly to think that the individuals described by Christian monotheistic theology(the Elohim) as God were actually such.

Furthermore, it is worth dwelling on two further elements.

The first:

In verse 24, when the author refers to the ‘El’ fighting with Jacob he uses the Hebrew word “man” îš (אִישׁ֙). He says:

24 Jacob was left there alone. Then some man wrestled with him until the break of dawn.”

Genesis 32:24 – interlinear – biblehub.com

This is a crucial detail and evidence of the fact that the biblical authors did not describe the Elohim as divine entities or even God, but rather as men of flesh and blood.

The second:

Verse 28 is very emblematic as it makes a clear distinction between mortals and Elohim and seems to take for granted that coexistence between men and gods that has always been told by all ancient peoples.

you have contended with Elohim and with mortals and have prevailed.

Genesis 32 – Hebrew Interlinear Bible – Westminster Leningrad Codex

The story, the narrative context, the Hebrew terms used, the logical implications: everything confirms that the Bible does not speak of God but refers to a group of special individuals, endowed with special powers and belonging to a different and much more powerful group, that is, that of the ancient gods, the Elohim, those who from heaven to earth came.
